Foray into Flora Event
For our Foray into Flora we welcomed a group of volunteers out to Moss Wood with the goal of documenting as many of plants we could see. We already have a great understanding on the tree species that make up this woodland, but these only make up part of the habitat. What we were interested in was understanding the smaller hidden species that often go overlooked as they're what make up the majority of the botanical biodiversity of this woodland. Armed with notepads and ID books we set off!
We were lucky enough to be joined by new island resident and published botanist Leif Bersweden, whose passion for plants is unmatched to help us ID and appreciate what we found.
We found a total of 25 different species, and this wasn't counting the grasses, mosses or ferns (they are a whole other mission to document). This is only the start of recording what's here and we are excited to see what new species to the area we come across next! A big part of recording this is to see what's missing from the area, and from this we can look to see what can be restored!
